Made from steel, the size relates to the length of the arms. It can be used to find the center of a circle. If the sliders are not adjusted after use then the same dividers can be used with the same measurment repeatedly. They can also mark parrelel intervals on wax ring tubes, this makes your cutting more accurate and true. The distance between the sprung arms is adjustable by means of a threaded post. Used for marking out (by scoring) eg. a circle, or use to indicate measured points on the metal surface.
